Naming A Jeep

February 27, 2021 by Margaret

So many Jeeper's have a deep pride in their rig. They are quick to point out the little decorative parts they painted to make it theirs. They talk about the tires, lights, bumpers, and all the other bolt on parts they replaced or added. All of the decisions THEY made to customize their Jeep. But when it comes to a name? Many are dumb founded, unable to come up with a name even after the intimate relationship they have forged with their rig.

Having Others Offer Names

Jeep Facebook pages are full of people in the Jeep community asking to "Help me name my Jeep". I thought they had this deep emotional love and bond for their Jeep.  A name will reveal itself as you work on the Jeep, drive the Jeep, get stuck in the Jeep, or even something outside of Jeeping that will became applicable to the Jeep as a name. Keep in mind when someone you don't even know starts throwing out names for your Jeep it is based on their personality, experiences, and opinions, not yours. I would be ashamed if someone asked me how we came up with our Jeep's name only be able to say "I don't have a story, someone I don't even know named it for me..." Stop worrying so hard in coming up with a name. Let the name come naturally and in its own time. When it does, it will be the right one at the right time.

The Story Behind Our Jeep's Name

Our little dog Twinkie that we lovingly refer to as "Bug" has always had an affinity for mud. She likes to get in mud puddles and root her little snout around in it. Because of this when she gets muddy we will call her a Mudbug. When we got the Jeep she pretty much told us it was her Jeep. Every time we uncover it, work on it, start it, or do anything with it she will run to it, stand by the door and start barking to get in. She doesn't do that with any of our other vehicles. Often times when we take her off roading with us both her and the Jeep will become covered in mud. Thus came about our Jeep's name of Mudbug.
